March is our First Nations month

This month, we will learn about First Nations cultures in Sasktatchewan. This includes treaty education, which is required by our province's curriculum. We will do a comparative study about First Nations traditional beliefs and stories. We will also publish a booklet illustrating the foundational beliefs and discuss the importance of animals such as the buffalo in First Nations' culture. And finally, we will study about the "first contact" between First Nations and European settlers in the west, and how this influenced both groups. For Friday's Show & Tell, I ask that students focus on what we are learning at school, and bring items related to our themes in class. These include the following:

Math: We have a new calendar routine which involves counting money. If students have a foreign currency to show, this would be relevant to this theme.

Language arts, Science and Social Studies: Any artifacts related to First Nations cultures would be most welcome. This includes clothing, pictures, etc.. Students can also bring items that are hand-made from natural materials, or artifacts from other cultures around the world.

For the month of March, I ask that students only bring Show & Tell items on Fridays, and please stick to the topics above. (Avoid bringing your favorite toys unless they're hand-made from natural materials, sports equipment etc.)
